You may be asking yourself, "What is Christian Heritage Academy of Midwifery all about?" We wanted to share the answers with you.
What does CHAM offer to students?
· CHAM is
designed to prepare CPMs (Certified Professional Midwife) for certification
through NARM (North American Registry of Midwives). Through Mentorship and
Skills Meetings we prepare students for a solid foundation in midwifery. CHAM
students study to know God and be used by Him to accomplish His purpose.
Mentorship is the core of CHAM.
Students have monthly contact with academy faculty to review progress, answer
questions, and to have a time of prayer. Students will apprentice with a
midwife in their area to gain birthing experiences. CHAM is available to assist
the student in the process of finding the right senior midwife for their
apprenticeship.
Skills Meetings are the training
sessions of CHAM. Each quarter, two Skills Meetings are held for two
consecutive days in Colorado. During the Skills Meeting, students will practice
skills, develop nutrition plans, learn about herbs and have a time of praise
and worship.
Young ladies, 13-17 years, who are interested in
midwifery, are encouraged to participate as Handmaidens. Handmaidens apprentice
with a CPM student to learn about midwifery and act as their helper.
Handmaidens are encouraged to attend age appropriate Skills Meetings and begin
studying suggested course work.
How long is the course?
This course is
three academic years, but for part-time students it may take up to five years. This
time frame does not include birth experience required for certification.
How
much does it cost?
For a full time
student it will cost $2145 per academic year. Contact CHAM for payment options
and part-time pricing.
How much time will this course require?
To complete the
material in the three years, the student should spend 50-60 hours of study time
per month. Birthing experiences for certification are not included in the hours
listed.
What curriculum
does CHAM use?
Curriculum from Midwifery Institute of America (MIA) is used the first year of the academy.
What prior
experience is required?
No prior
experience is required. A list of reading material to prepare for enrollment is
available upon request.
Do
you offer Doula training?
Yes, through
Rocky Mountain Doula.
Is there an age requirement?
CHAM’s
Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) program is open to women 17 years and
older.
Doula certification
cannot be completed until 18 years old but prior reading and experience may be
completed at the student’s own pace.
Handmaidens are young women
13-17 years of age who are interested in the midwifery process but are
completing high school requirements. To learn more about Handmaidens, contact CHAM.
Where does
CHAM meet?
Skills
Meetings will be held at the Christian Home Educators of Colorado main office
in Parker, Colorado.
Do you have to live in Colorado to enroll
in CHAM?
No. Students are
welcome from anywhere. We do ask that the student participate in the annual
retreat held in August to have skills assessed and shadow midwives in their
area who are approved by the Director.
Is CHAM accredited?
No. CHAM prepares
students to take the required certification test in their state of residence.
